China's GDP contracted by 6.8 percent year-on-year during the first quarter of the year as the COVID-19 outbreak interrupted economic activity, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Friday.

国家统计局17日公布的数据显示，由于新冠肺炎疫情直接冲击正常生产生活秩序，2020年一季度中国国内生产总值同比下降6.8%。

Economic and social situation maintained overall stability and stood the test of outbreak, with economic indicators having improved in March as work resumption accelerated, the bureau said in a statement.

国家统计局在一份声明中表示，我国基本民生保障有力，社会大局保持稳定，随着疫情防控成效不断显现，复工复产进度加快推进，3月份主要经济指标明显改善。

Industrial output declined by 8.4 percent year-on-year in the first quarter, recovering from a 13.5 percent contraction in during the first two months, according to the NBS.

数据显示，一季度，工业产出同比下降8.4%，1-2月工业产出同比骤降13.5%。

The contraction of retail sales narrowed to 19 percent year-on-year in the first three months, versus 20.5 percent of the Jan-Feb period.

一季度，社会消费品零售额同比下降19.0%，1-2月零售额下降20.5%。

Fixed-asset investment dropped by 16.1 percent during the January-March period, compared with 24.5 percent in the first two months.

1-3月份，固定资产投资同比下降16.1%，1-2月下降24.5%。

Surveyed urban unemployment rate nationwide was 5.9 percent in March, down by 0.3 percentage points from February.

US President Donald Trump announced Tuesday a suspension of US funding to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Trump said at a news conference in the White House Rose Garden that his administration is withholding the US contribution of $400 million to WHO.

António Guterres, the UN secretary general, declared now was “not the time to reduce the resources for the operations of the World Health Organization or any other humanitarian organization in the fight against the virus.

The Supreme People's Procuratorate and the Ministry of Public Security said on Monday that they have dispatched a joint team to Shandong province to supervise the investigation of a case in which a former company executive was suspected of sexually assaulting his "adopted" teenage daughter.

最高人民检察院及公安部13日表示，针对某公司前高管涉嫌性侵未成年“养女”案，已派出联合督导组赴山东，对该案办理工作进行督导。

The case triggered wide attention nationwide last week after Chinese media reported a woman's allegation that her "adopted" father, surnamed Bao, had started sexually assaulting her around 2016 when she was 14 years old.

上周，国内媒体报道了一女子指控其“养父”鲍某某在2016年她14岁时开始对其实施性侵，该事件引起了全国范围内的广泛关注。

The woman also said she had sought help and had been trying to get Shandong police to take action since last year, but the case was withdrawn after it was first filed in April 2019, according to a report by South Reviews, a Guangdong-based magazine, on Sunday.

The global economy is on track to contract "sharply" by 3% in 2020, much worse than during the 2008-09 financial crisis, according to a World Economic Outlook report released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Tuesday.

"The world has changed dramatically in the three months since our last update of World Economic Outlook in January," IMF Chief Economist Gita Gopinath said at a virtual press conference, noting that the latest projection is 6.3 percentage points lower than the previous estimation.

Local governments in China have introduced their plans to implement a 2.5-day weekend to stimulate consumption.

On March 19, east China’s Jiangxi province took the lead in trying this flexible work schedule in the second quarter, encouraging government officials and ordinary workers alike to go on vacations during the weekends. Authorities in east China’s Zhejiang province, north China’s Hebei province and Longnan city in northwest China’s Gansu province, followed suit and proposed to try out a 2.5-day weekend.

Such moves have raised heated discussions on Chinese social media. Experts noted that the 2.5-day weekend plan is a special policy for local governments to promote economic recovery, especially the tourism industry.

On Wednesday evening, Shandong University of Technology expelled a student who brutally killed stray cats and shared disturbing videos of the process online.

4月15日，山东理工大学对该校一虐杀流浪猫并在网上发布骇人视频的学生，予以退学处理。

The videos are no longer available online, but according to a report in Beijing News, the cats were flogged, burned alive or given electric shocks. A cropped video clip in the report showed something red, possibly the flesh of a tortured cat. Some reports suggested he might have been selling the videos online.

虐猫视频已从网上删除，据新京报报道，这些猫被鞭打、活活烧死或电击。报道称，一段剪辑过的视频显示出某些红色的东西，可能是被虐待的猫的肉。有报道称，该学生可能一直在网上出售这些视频。

The university launched a joint investigation with the police after someone reported the case on social media on April 8. The authorities zeroed in on the student, who has since been psychologically counseled. It is not clear if he will be punished, as there is no law prohibiting killing of animals that are not on the protected list; but he could land in trouble for sharing videos of the brutal killings online.
