February is the shortest month of the year, nevertheless, we have managed to squeeze as many activities into it as possible. From swimming tournaments to charity efforts for Turkey and Syria, the past three weeks have been action-packed. In case you missed it, here is our highlight reel!

CNY at EYC

Our youngest Wellingtonians at the Early Years Centre kicked off the new term and the Year of the Rabbit with an exciting bian lian, or face-changing, performance. A signature element of traditional Sichuan opera, bian lian features a character who magically changes masks with the flourish of a fan or the swipe of a hand. The children were absolutely awestruck as they experienced a timeless piece of Chinese culture and had plenty of fun putting on performances for their parents and each other!

Christmas…in February?

Well, it is never too late (or too early) for a little bit of Christmas cheer! And with 2022’s pandemic restrictions lifted, there is still plenty of cause to celebrate. So, our musicians put on a spectacular live — and, more importantly, in person — performance of some festive Christmas classics with their Christmas Concert – in the Spring! Whether it was the College Big Band belting out ‘Nutcracker Swing’ or the Wellington Orchestra’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies’, hearts were thoroughly warmed with holiday cheer, and there was plenty of applause for Santa for visiting early this year!

Turkey and Syria earthquake relief

When a devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit southern Turkey and northern Syria on 6 February, Wellingtonians sprang immediately into action. With the help of the Friends of Wellington, our pupils collected essential items like tents, blankets, sleeping bags, emergency blankets, warm clothes, food, hygiene products, baby food, nappies and toys to provide. They gathered enough provisions to fill 25 boxes, which were sent to the Turkish Consulate and are currently on their way to those who need them. Wellingtonians also raised over 50,000 RMB in a baby milk fund drive for the earthquake victims in Syria. These are acts of Wellington Kindness that we should all be proud of!

COBIS Art Competition

Two Wellington Shanghai pupils excelled in the 2023 COBIS Art Competition. This year’s theme was ‘Who am I?’, which prompted some deeply introspective and compelling studies in self-reflection. Year 9 pupil Jay’s work was selected as the runner-up in the Key Stage 3 category and year 12 pupil Aaliyaa’s work was selected as the runner-up for the Key Stage 5 category. Their works are truly stunning. Congratulations to them both!

Year 2’s Greatest Show on Earth

Swipe Left

This month, the circus came to the Wellington Pre-Prep foyer. This hook day was organised to get our year 2 pupils excited about their new inquiry topic 'The Circus is Coming to Town'. Before the show started, they went to the circus shop where they used their Welly Bucks to purchase some popcorn, a circus hat and their circus tickets. The children were treated to performances by marvellous magicians, crazy clowns, amazing acrobats and even a jolly juggler. Over the coming weeks, the children will compare the different types of circuses, look at maps of where a good place for the circus would be and map out their own circus journey.

Shanghai Swim League Competition

Wellingtonians were in top form at the Shanghai Swim League Round (SSL) Three competition. Held in Nanjing on 11 February, this was the first meet since the pandemic in which all SSL member schools were able to attend. Our team returned to Shanghai with an impressive five trophies. Swimmers placed third in the girls and boys 13/14 category and second in boys 15+. The team also won an overall third-place trophy and an overall aggregate first-place trophy. Way to go!

100 Days of Friendship Celebration

Swipe Left

Our Early Years Centre Pupils have been spending the final full week of February celebrating 100 Days of Friendship with their sister school Huili Nursery Shanghai. The highlight of the celebration was a ‘class swap’, in which half of an Early Years Centre class traded places with half of a Huili Nursery class to join together for a lesson. It was a fun and enriching activity for all as they got better acquainted with fellow members of the Wellington Family.
