Here is your month in review
This is it, our penultimate month of the academic year. From spectacular stage performances to TEDx Talks to dragon boat races, June was full of action and excitement. It even literally ended with a bang when we awarded the 2022-23 House Cup. Here is our final monthly round up!
Guys and Dolls

Our Upper Prep pupils wowed audiences this month with the Frank Loesser classic Guys & Dolls. Performers put on a spectacular show with incredible dance numbers and toe-tapping Broadway standards like ‘Fugue for Tinhorns’ and ‘Luck Be a Lady’. More importantly, it was a valuable growth experience. Pupils learned the value of resilience through discipline and hard work and lived the Wellington Value of Courage by overcoming their fears, getting on stage and putting on a fantastic show.
Little Red Riding Hood
Not to be outdone by their Upper Prep peers, our year 3 pupils took to the Blackbox Theatre for a production of Little Red Riding Hood. These budding young thespians incorporated drama and music with signature Wellington flair, breathing new life into this classic children’s tale about a young girl, her grandmother and, of course, the big bad wolf!
The Forbidden City
Storytelling Competition
Three pupils made us proud this month by placing high in the Forbidden City Storytelling Competition. Since February, over 1,500 pupils have participated in presentations and speech competitions, with 32 pupils from 18 schools making it to the final round. The primary, junior high, and senior high school groups were well-represented, with children from various countries and regions offering unique perspectives on the Forbidden City and China's history. Wellington pupils excelled, with Jessie (year 5) winning third prize in the primary group, Lucy (year 7) taking first prize in the junior group Charlie (year 9) earning second prize in the senior group. They were honoured for their performances in an awards ceremony earlier this month.
In addition, Charlie performed a talk show at the awards ceremony which received high praise from everyone in the audience.
An afternoon of French and Spanish

The Wellington Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) Department hosted a French and Spanish afternoon. It was a celebration of language, culture and food with over 100 parents in attendance. The French corner offered gourmet cheeses and wines, while the MFL team prepared Spanish omelettes, quiches and paellas. Pupils played traditional games to foster cultural appreciation, while parents indulged in treats and conversation. Pupils, parents and teachers experienced the power of language in promoting cross-cultural understanding and exploring the rich tapestry of languages and cultures at Wellington.
EYC Graduation Ceremony
Our pupils in Reception celebrated a major milestone with our first-ever Early Years Centre graduation commencement. Teachers delivered inspiring speeches and pupils even wore gowns and mortarboards. We marked this momentous occasion by handing out diplomas as well as gifts like Welly the Lion plush toys. Big congratulations to our Toucan, Owl, Parrot, Eagle and Hummingbird classes. You have spread your wings and are now ready to fly on to year 1 at the main campus!
Imagine Dragons

After a hiatus last year, we once again came together to celebrate Dragon Boat Festival, the final traditional Chinese festival of the academic year. Our Upper Prep and Senior School pupils and teachers represented their houses in an exciting land-based dragon boat race. And it was a lot more challenging than you might think! Meanwhile, pupils from our Dragon Dance CCA put on a special performance on the AstroTurf pitch. Meanwhile, our youngest pupils at the Early Years Centre made calamus bouquets and iris bags and even wrapped zongzi. The children also made their own dragon boats out of cardboard and raced them for fun. A fun time was had by all as we learned a little about Chinese culture and history in the process.
TEDxYouth@WCIS
TEDxYouth@WCIS returned this month. Pupils from a broad range of year groups presented their own ‘ideas worth spreading’ as they explored the theme of ‘Scrutiny’. This completely pupil-led event offered Wellingtonians the opportunity to research a topic in depth, organise their ideas around it and then hone their public speaking skills. It was a wonderful way to put our Wellington Value of Courage into practice.
FOW Golden Gratitude Trees
The FOW showed their appreciation for our teachers and parent volunteers with their Golden Gratitude Trees. Cards were given to all pupils to write notes of gratitude to their favourite teachers and attach them to the trees at both the main campus and the Early Years Centre. This was an opportunity for the pupils to thank the educators who supported and guided them throughout the school year. The Core Committee and Senior Leadership Team also hosted an appreciation event at V&A, with speeches and refreshments for all volunteers who supported our community throughout the year. All those that volunteered also went home with one of Wellington’s coveted Community Trinkets to mark the moment!
Our Dragon Boat festivities were the capstone to the year’s house competitions. So, after the final dragon boat crossed the finish line, all points were tallied, and the House Cup, our award for the house that excelled in academics, sports and the arts, was ready to be presented to this year’s winners. Canons blasted massive plumes of powder blue smoke, signifying that House Stanley was the victor. Mr Fulton presented the coveted crystal trophy to the winners. Congratulations, House Stanley, on a job well done!
