在今天这个科学和理性至上的时代，我们信奉科学完满而唯一，可“迫近真理”：任何现在不知的，假以时日，都可被攻克。正统科学教育灌输此等信念时，却很少告诉学生，选择科学，意味着抛弃生命中不可科学化的层面。是永久抛弃，并非假以时日，又可重拾。这是偏狭、荒诞，与科学精神相悖。让学生眼中的科学只有技艺，无哲学与精神，是侵犯人类心智的完满！讽刺的是，今天我们强调跨界，又避而不谈科学之为一界。似乎跨过科学，与非科学对话，不仅不是跨界，更不可饶恕。结果，科学要求开放，我们培养抗拒。

STS研究的很大一部分，探讨科学和技术的效力、边界、及其社会后果。人类学的政治经济学派说，行动有后果，社会有记忆。STS把科学和技术视为有社会后果的社会实践，是人类认知和行为方式中的一种，强大却非唯一。
