In 1893, a determined group of New Yorkers arrived in Bradley Beach to realize their vision of a beachside escape from Manhattan.  Upon settlement, the property that now hosts The James was constructed in 1904 as a Victorian style, single-family home. Now the space is a stylized enclave for those looking to enjoy a unique refuge from their daily stress.

The boutique hotel underwent a meticulous restoration, transforming the 118-year-old property into a serene 17-room sanctuary.

The brainchild of owner George DiStefano and Manhattan-based interior designer Sebastian Zuchowicki, The James Bradley represents both individuals’ inaugural foray into the hotel sector. Together, they have reimagined the conventional bed and breakfast concept, infusing the property with a blend of local charm and international sophistication.

In explaining the design, DiStefano says: “I wanted to create an experience that captured the essence of the Jersey Shore, while integrating a timeless and minimalistic design to show the concept that casual living can still feel elegant. Having grown up on the Jersey Shore, my summers were spent at the beach. When I first saw the property, formerly ‘The Sandcastle Inn,’ in May of 2021, I had an inexplicable feeling that I could make it something special. A year later, it became a reality that exceeded my expectations and I could not be more excited.”

During a year-long renovation, the main house underwent an expansion to accommodate seven additional guest rooms, while the rear structure was transformed into a three-bedroom standalone bungalow. The furniture and design feature an elegant blend of vintage pieces, sourced both locally and internationally, along with custom fabrications by Zuchowicki. The decor is further enhanced by handcrafted tables, lamps, and a 20-Panel White Oak folding screen handmade by DiStefano himself.

Discerning guests who understand that even the choice of soap can speak volumes about a property and its values can rest assured that The James Bradley has partnered with Flamingo Estate, a relatively new but no less exceptional purveyor of soaps and home goods.

Guests of the hotel are also treated to exclusive beach access nearby, a mere two-minute stroll from their doorstep. During the summer months, the hotel extends its hospitality with a beach concierge service, offering amenities ranging from sun loungers and umbrellas to beach games and towels.
