They Entered IKEA and They Got Sent to Makeshift Hospitals

The announcement on schools reopening in September brings great relief to many residents but fears about COVID lockdowns continue to persist, as China vows to stick to its dynamic zero policy which requires all positive cases and their close contacts to undergo quarantine.

On Saturday, videos circulating on Chinese social media showed customers pushing past security guards and running out of an IKEA mall in central Shanghai in panic as an announcement blared over its sound system saying the mall was being locked down due to COVID contact tracing.

IKEA customer service said on Sunday the mall was shut due to COVID curbs.

According to Zhao Dandan, deputy director of the Shanghai Health Commission, after a close contact of the local confrmed infection was traced to IKEA Xuhui District outlet, the mall and relevant personnel are put under 2-day centralizd quarantine and 5-day self-health monitoring. The store will reopen if no abnormality is found after the quarantine and screening, he explained.

Detailed control measures will be decided on further risk evalution. If citizens receive investigation calls, they must provide their travel history and relevant information honestly. If they reeive health alert messages, they must take PCR test immediately and implement prevention measures as told in the text.

The local COVID-19 community infection is a six-year-old boy who traveled back from Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

The boy took China Eastern Airlines' Flight MU2336 from Lhasa to Shanghai on August 9 and reported abnormalities in his PCR test during the self-health monitoring period.

He had been to Children's Hospital of Fudan University on 399 Wanyuan Road. A total of 396 of his close contacts had been traced as of 4pm on Sunday and more than 80,000 related people are under PCR screening.
