Long-standing History

and Abundant Educational

Resources

Founded by Madam Tsang Chor-hang in 1932 with the noble aim of empowering China through education, the inaugural Yew Chung School has been thriving for more than 90 years.

In 1993, Yew Chung International School of Shanghai (YCIS Shanghai) was established and became the first independent international school in Shanghai officially recognised by and registered with the Chinese government.

Over the past 30 years, the Yew Chung Yew Wah Education Network (YCYW) has expanded throughout Mainland, Silicon Valley in the United States, and Somerset in the United Kingdom. To date, there are more than 30 Yew Chung Yew Wah schools in 10 cities across China, as well as in the United States and the United Kingdom, realising a unique pedigree for nurturing future generations from Baby to Bachelor.

The abundance of sister schools means that educational resources are mutually shared, and internal transfers are more convenient. Furthermore, students have the opportunity to build collaborative relationships and exchange ideas with peers from around the world, fostering mutual growth and progress.

Excellent Academics

YCIS students have always maintained academic excellence, and the school exceptionally proud of their achievements. Specifically, the Classes of 2022 and 2023 have demonstrated exceptional productivity, focus, and composure leading up to their final IBDP exams.

Among them, 4 students achieved perfect scores, and over 80% of graduates attained the IBDP Bilingual Diploma. In the IGCSE exams, 5 students received 10 A*/A grades or more, while 10 students earned 9 A*/A grades or more.

The accolades go beyond the classrooms, including winning maths competitions such as AMC10, UKMT, Caribou Cup, business competitions such as Wharton Business Investment Challenge, science competitions such as VEX Robotics World Championship and sports competitions like CISSA, SISAC, and ACAMIS, claiming top in their age brackets and against peers from all around the world.

The graduates of YCIS Shanghai have made their mark in top universities worldwide, from Oxford and Cambridge to Stanford and the University of Pennsylvania. They have also excelled in diverse fields of study, attending prestigious institutions such as Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, Parsons School of Design, the Berklee College of Music, and the Swiss Hotel Management School in Lausanne.

YCIS Mission

At the founding of the first Yew Chung school in Hong Kong in 1932, the school committed to aligning with:

  • Science & Technology

  • Culture & Arts

  • Love & Charity

Aligning with Science and Technology

YCIS Shanghai has always placed great emphasis on science and technology. To help students better understand scientific knowledge, develop scientific literacy and practical abilities, teachers lead students to undertake various special projects in their daily lives, encouraging them to proactively study and research through independent exploration and teamwork.

YCIS Shanghai also strives to create as many opportunities as possible for students to participate in various scientific competitions and offering numerous internships.

This academic year, YCYW Network established Educational Futures Division (EdFutures, EFD), aimed at enriching students' learning experience through cross-school, collaborative and future thinking programmes

As the pillar, the Super-Curricular Programme offers the students a wide range of enhanced learning experiences that push them beyond the normal curriculum.

Through expert workshops, public speaking, VR design, particle physics masterclasses, the programme provides students with deeper and broader learning experiences, as well as practical experience.

Aligning with Culture and Arts

YCIS Shanghai also places great importance on cultivating students' artistic literacy, with professional art teachers and a wealth of arts courses and activities across all stages to foster students' creativity and independence.

Music plays an important role at YCIS. From their unique violin programme for students in Years 1-3 to the many musical performances that happen all year round, not only do children build confidence and presentation skills, they also develop extremely strong instrumental skills and a lifelong appreciation for music. YCIS also has the In-school Individual Instrumental Programme (IIIP) that provides a range of class selections.

In 2005, the Artist-in-Residence (AIR) programme was launched as part of Yew Chung's overall art offerings. Over the past 18 years, the artists have overseen various exciting and community-based activities within the school.

Furthermore, the AIRs, together with their talented Visual Art teachers, have also extended valuable opportunities to students by facilitating curation efforts and hosting exhibitions in collaboration with professionals, inspiring students to pursue their creativity.

Aligning with Love and Charity

YCIS Shanghai places great importance on character development. From Early Childhood all the way to Upper Secondary, every YCIS student realises the importance of helping others to work towards creating a better world.

This positive guidance forms the basis of the school’s Wellbeing Programme, which is emphasized in daily lessons, weekly assemblies, and other activities beyond the classroom walls, and is essential to the YCIS education and the nurturing of global citizens.

Outside of the classroom, YCIS Shanghai places great importance on its Service Learning Programme, encouraging students to give back to the community both within and beyond the classroom, fostering empathy, awareness, and a global perspective in aspiring servant leaders.

Combining the Best of Eastern and Western Cultures

At YCIS Shanghai, they believe that bilingual education is not just about speaking two languages but goes beyond that to encompass a deep cultural understanding as well as becoming proficient in both languages in a rigorous academic setting.

English Development

English is the primary language of instruction at YCIS. They integrate best practices from existing education systems around the world, and draw upon the essence of various cutting-edge teaching methods.

In Early Childhood, the bilingual programme and co-teachers support children with their development of English and Chinese abilities.

In Primary, students have around 90 minutes of dedicated English language classes every day. Mathematics is co-taught in English and Mandarin, whilst specialist classes (Art, ICT, PE, Music) are taught in English.

In Secondary, they place emphasis on cultivating students' ability to express themselves clearly, accurately and effectively in both speaking and writing.

They encourage students to read extensively, to enjoy the pleasure of reading, and to further deepen their awareness of the different uses of English. Moreover, students will also acquire more refined analytical and communication skills.

As not every student speaks English as their native tongue, we provide EAL (English as an Additional Language) as support for non-native English-speaking students. A specialised teacher will provide small group lessons for EAL to help them gain both confidence and proficiency in the language. Many non-native English-speaking students go on to achieve the prestigious Bilingual Diploma at IB when they graduate.

Chinese Language and Culture Programme

YCIS’ Chinese Language and Culture Programme is one of the cornerstones of the globally progressive education they provide, and it helps open doors for students and fosters their cross-cultural thinking and open-mindedness.

Chinese Classes

At YCIS Shanghai, students learn to read, write, and speak fluently in Chinese. Their curriculum caters for all ages from Early Childhood Education through to Secondary, and is tailored for both non-native and native speakers.

All students in Primary and Secondary Programmes have a one-hour Chinese language lesson every day, helping them to establish a path toward fluency.

In addition to daily language lessons, our students in Years 1-9 take one hour of Chinese culture lesson per week as part of our Chinese Studies Course. The learning topics are diverse, and integrate subjects such as History, Geography, Literature, Art and Music, and cultural traditions, adding meaningful context to the Chinese language students are studying in class.

Bilingual Learning Communities

YCIS believe that Bilingual Learning Communities best enable students and teachers to explore different fields of knowledge creatively and holistically, fostering individual and collaborative learning skills that are critical for the 21" century.

Through this forward-thinking approach, students become capable of adapting, know how to build knowledge, and communicate effectively with others.

Stable and Professional Staff

YCIS’ team of highly qualified teaching staff is the backbone of YCIS Shanghai’s global education.

Their teachers come from 27 countries around the world, with more than 160 holding master's or doctoral degrees and an average of 10 years of teaching experience.

In addition to their outstanding teaching capabilities, they maintain a strong sense of belonging to YCIS Shanghai, with an average tenure of 5 years, and over 100 faculty and staff members having served for over 10 years.

This brings great cohesion as teachers genuinely believe in and uphold the school’s educational philosophy.

A Diverse Community

YCIS Shanghai places a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusivity, creating a welcoming and friendly environment for over 2,400 students from more than 50 countries and regions around the world. They encourage students from a range of backgrounds to learn from and communicate with each other, inspire, and support each other, and grow together.

Whether in the classroom, extracurricular activities or out of school, the YCIS community provides students with extensive learning resources and opportunities.

Prime Location

YCIS Shanghai has six campuses that provide world-class education experiences for children aged 2-18.

The three Puxi campuses are situated in the prime location of Gubei, only a few minutes away from each other, with nearby metro stations, shopping malls, and various convenient facilities. The three Pudong campuses are located adjacent to Regency Park, Century Park, and Lingang New Area respectively.

To acknowledge and encourage students who have achieved outstanding academic results or displayed exceptional performance in other fields, as well as to provide opportunities for more outstanding students from diverse backgrounds to receive high-quality international education, YCIS Shanghai has launched scholarship and financial aid programmes.
