Floods in China: A Perspective from Three Oceans

报告摘要


The oceans play an important role in forming and modulating climate and extreme weather events over the globe. This talk will focus on three-ocean interaction – one of the most cutting-edge topics in the ocean and climate research community. It is shown that under the combined effect of all three oceans, the rainfall over the Yangtze River Valley in June 2020 broke the regional record since 1979. Specifically, via the Atlantic-induced wave train activity across Europe, the western North Atlantic Ocean changed the North China vorticity, playing a dominant role in this record-breaking event. Warm sea surface temperature anomalies in the Indian and tropical North Atlantic Oceans, which can be related to Pacific EI Niño in the preceding winter, impacted the vorticity in the South China Sea and thus facilitated the rainfall over the Yangtze River Valley by providing favorable moisture conditions. The talk will also briefly review and discuss the present understanding of three-ocean interaction and global climate.

王春在,中国科学院南海海洋研究所特聘研究员,热带海洋环境国家重点实验室主任,国家高层次人才引进计划专家,中国科学院学术帅才。主要从事海洋-大气相互作用和气候变化方面的研究。在Nature, Nature Climate Change, Science Advances, Nature Communications等国际学术期刊发表SCI论文166篇,其中第一作者60篇,H-指数为55,入选爱思唯尔 (Elsevier) 全球论文高被引科学家,英国路透社气候变化领域全球最具影响力的1000位科学家。曾担任国际著名学术刊物(如Journal of Geophysical Research-Oceans, Journal of Climate)的主编或副主编,国际“气候变化及可预报性研究计划”泛美海区气候过程研究计划(CLIVAR/IASCLIP)的联合主席。现任国际“气候变化及可预报性研究计划”热带洋盆相互作用(CLIVAR/TBI)委员会委员、ENSO理论概念模式(CLIVAR/ECM)工作组成员。
